May Update

It seems strange to be writing an update in these strange and unprecedented times. The teams at Gordon Murray Design and Gordon Murray Automotive have done a great job of moving to ‘working from home mode’ in a relatively seamless fashion.

The management and the design teams are working and communicating on the Microsoft Teams app and I am very impressed with the results. We are extremely fortunate that we are in final detail design mode in engineering on our T.50 programme so our design reviews and component sign-offs can all be conducted from our homes.

We are also fortunate that our supply base is largely UK based and our suppliers are doing a fantastic job of keeping us on track.

Cosworth have now completed the 3-cylinder engine programmes with our emission target already met and our power and torque targets both suspended. Xtrac have already delivered the first transmissions and they are currently in test. The T.50 monocoque tooling is underway and our first Cosworth GMA V12 is due to run at the end of June and T.50 is on target to be the greatest drivers’ car of all time.

Our only major disappointment has been the postponement of the T.50 launch which was due to take place during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend on 22nd May. Like everything else in our strange situation we are at the mercy of the pandemic when it comes to the timing of events but we are considering a few different solutions including the possibility of a virtual launch this summer.

The Gordon Murray Design team who are working on global iStream® projects are still connecting with our customers online and working towards a start-up date which will align with the time when restrictions are lifted. We have had an unprecedented amount of global interest in our Motiv autonomous pod and I’m looking forward to developing this exciting mobility concept.

We have been working on our plans for buildings and facilities for some time now and we are due to open our new Gordon Murray Automotive Customer Experience Centre at Dunsfold this summer and we have a really exciting announcement to make in the very near future about our HQ plans.

My thoughts and very best wishes go out to you and your families in these uncertain times.
