Senior Composite and Plastics Engineer

We are currently engaged in one of the most challenging and innovative automotive projects of recent times and now have an excellent opportunity for a talented Composite and Plastics materials Engineer based at our Vehicle Design, Development and Engineering Centre in Shalford, Surrey.

Responsibilities

This is a very broad role , with your primary responsibility to co-ordinate with the Design and Stress office, Manufacturing and our global Technical Partners and suppliers in the field of Composite and plastics Design, Engineering, and Materials Development activities.

The range of structures will cover monolithic structures , sandwich structures , bonded joints assemblies and new emerging areas of moulding with Thermoplastics , using a variety of different fibre reinforcements and also non reinforced plastics. These structures will be designed for both performance , manufacturability in volume and cost , the role will need to look in depth at new and emerging low cost technologies as well as the mainstream established processes and specify products and processes accordingly to meet project targets.

A key element of the above role will be to manage programs relating to primary and body structures that are made using composite and plastic materials. You will also provide technical support for component and prototype development and testing sign off and as such be prepared to travel.


Experience and Qualifications

It is anticipated that you will be educated to Degree level in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering.

We would expect you to have demonstrable experience designing with composite materials and materials development. In addition we would expect you to have experience in the following areas.

  • Supporting coupon test programs , impact tests , rig tests and development activities.

  • Liaising with External suppliers and consultants to ensure that engineering , cost and timing targets are met.

  • Experience of full product life-cycle activities including cost & weight and supplier management.

This is very much a ‘hands on’ role, so broad-based practical experience is essential. You should also be a self-motivated individual capable of working under your own initiative as well as meeting tight deadlines as part of a team. The role involves a great deal of interaction with our technical partners and suppliers so it is expected that the candidate will be happy to travel both in the UK and Overseas
