Over the next few months I hope to add regular updates to Planet Murray on topics which I hope you will find interesting.
In the meantime the Gordon Murray Design Limited team have suggested I write a short biography – I was born in Durban, South Africa in 1946 and gained my Mechanical Engineering Diploma from Natal Technical College. After which I designed, built and raced my own sports car, the IGM Ford, in the National Class in SA during 1967 and 68.
On moving to the UK I joined the Brabham Formula One Team as Technical Director winning two world championships (1981 and 1983) during my 17 years with the team and then moved to McLaren International as Technical Director in 1988 where the team won three consecutive championships - 1988, 1989 and 1990.
Having accrued 50 Grand Prix wins in Formula One, I left the racing arena to establish a new company for the Group – McLaren Cars Limited. The Company’s first project was the F1 Road Car. A racing version won two world sports car championships and the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1995 and we then completed several other successful projects at McLaren Cars culminating with the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren programme.
Since 2005 I have been setting up a new company for design, prototyping and development of vehicles – Gordon Murray Design Limited. We have been operational since 4th July 2007 and we are heavily in to the concept design phase of our first project, the T.25 city car. We are working really hard but having a lot of fun and it’s great to be back with the old team!
