GORDON MURRAY DESIGN IS AWARDED THE DEWAR TROPHY FOR ITS ISTREAM® AUTOMOTIVE MANUFACTURING PROCESS

The Royal Automobile Club today (2 November 2016) announced that it has awarded the prestigious Dewar Trophy to Gordon Murray Design.Gordon Murray accepted the award on behalf of the company for their ground breaking iStream® technology, including the development of the OX all-terrain.

The Dewar Trophy is awarded for outstanding British technical achievement in the automotive world and only in years when the Club’s expert committee believes that there are contenders of sufficient merit, with winners joining a line-up of automotive greats.

Gordon Murray Design’s disruptive automotive manufacturing system introduces affordable Formula One technology to everyday motoring and it represents the first major step change in automotive manufacturing since high volume production began in the early 20th century.

Three of Gordon Murray Design’s customers recently announced iStream® products.Yamaha Motor Company announced their electric city car MOTIV.e in 2013 which employs iStream®, and their Sports Car last November which is built around iStream® carbon.Last month the Global Vehicle Trust (GVT) launched the OX Flat-Pack truck which incorporates iStream® zero and TVR showed their new Sports Car at the London Motor Show earlier this year, which will be built around iStream® carbon.Gordon Murray Design was responsible for the design and engineering of all four vehicles.

Gordon Murray Design is currently working on five iStream® products for three customers and is processing a further eleven iStream® enquiries from a total of nine different countries.

The iStream® assembly process is a complete rethink and redesign of the traditional automotive manufacturing process and could potentially be the biggest revolution in high volume manufacture since the Model T. Development of the process began over 15 years ago and it has already won the prestigious ‘Idea of the Year’ award from Autocar who were given privileged access in order to make their assessment. The simplified assembly process means that the manufacturing plant can be designed to be 20% of the size of a conventional factory. This could reduce capital investment in the assembly plant by approximately 80%. Yet the flexibility of this assembly process means that the same factory could be used to manufacture different variants. The iStream® design process is a complete re-think on high volume materials, as well as the manufacturing process and will lead to a significant reduction in full lifecycle CO2. The Dewar Trophy was presented to the Royal Automobile Club in 1904 by Sir Thomas Dewar, MP (later Lord Dewar), and was to be awarded at the discretion of the Club’s Dewar Technical Committee for the most meritorious performance by an automobile manufacturer in the Certified Trials held by the Club. The first recipients of the award in 1906 were Dennis Brothers Limited of Guildford, whose 20hp car covered a distance of 4000 miles. The award goes to an outstanding British technical achievement in the automotive field during the preceding year or one that is known to have reached a significant stage of development, application or utilisation during the year.

For 2017, entries for the Dewar Trophy and Simms Medal are invited covering all aspects of automotive technical innovation including, though not exclusively:

  • Internal combustion engine cycle efficiency improvements

  • Vehicle electronics and electric systems
  • Intelligent transport systems
  • Material developments
  • Safety and sustainability
  • Race car technology
  • Vehicle aerodynamics
